Some men and women are dedicated to washing and detailing their cars at home. Unless they truly enjoy the project, however, they probably aren't doing the job as thoroughly as professional car detailers would. There are environmental advantages of a detailing service as well, such as minimizing the use of fresh water and disposing of wastewater in an environmentally friendly way.
More Thorough Cleaning
At home, it's difficult to accomplish an underbody flush. A car wash almost certainly is more effective at removing grime and other substances.
The owner could just run the car through an automatic wash without detailing service, but people often are a little disappointed afterward. There might still be some dirt in crevices, along the interior edges of doors and behind the fuel cap door. The detailing workers hand-clean those areas, wiping away all the debris and making sure the vehicle is spotless. In addition, they make sure the inside is free of dirt, dust, and organic debris when the job is complete.
Depending on the method used, washing a car by hand might use over 100 gallons of water. With a nozzle hose that can be turned off, using about 40 gallons may be expected. A hose that isn't shut off during the process could use 140.
In contrast, a professional detailing service typically only requires 15 gallons of fresh water at most. During the automatic car wash portion of the service, the used water is filtered and then recycled for future washes. The final rinse applies fresh water, ensuring the vehicle is totally clean.
As the water in the recycling tank repeatedly reaches the top, some overflows into another tank from which it is directed to an approved location. The Clean Water Act mandates that this water either be sent to a treatment plant or a drainage facility approved by the state.
A different scenario usually unfolds at home, though. The soapy, dirty liquid likely flows down the driveway into the street's storm sewer system. It then flows to waterways such as rivers, lakes and streams. It might contain not only soap and dirt, but road salt, exhaust particles, and automotive fluids.
When considering the time a person must spend on these tasks and the environmental effects, it becomes clear that a detailing service is a reasonable option. The car is assuredly cleaner than it would be otherwise, especially since the workers also vacuum and wipe down the interior. A customer is prouder of the automobile when leaving the building.
